Campenoes
The movie follows Marco Montes, a basketball trainer for the most prestigious teams. While his team was losing, he disagreed with the other trainer and hit him on the face. The judge that oversaw Marco proposed him to train a team of mentally disabled people for basketball. At first, Marco is reticent, but he will learn how to accept other’s differences and make new friends all along the film.
I watched this film two times, and for me seeing it again was a little boring. Therefore, I enjoyed it the first time. I think it’s a very positive movie that can easily bring a smile on our face. I believe it manages to be funny without discrediting disabled people and can also make us think about how society cope with these people. I would certainly recommend this movie, but to watch it without any waits about it, because even if it’s a cute movie, the plot is not moving a lot and it’s not hard to understand for one session.
Directed by Javier Fesser and starring Javier Gutiérrez as Marco Montes, Campeones is a Spanish comedy-drama, that was released in 2018.
Marco Montes is the assistant coach of the basketball team CB Estudiantes. However, one day, after pushing the head coach during a game over a disagreement concerning team strategy, Marco gets fired. He then gets arrested, for driving drunk into the back of a police car. In order to escape two years of prison, Marco has to spend ninety days making community services, by coaching “Los Amigos”, a team formed by intellectually disabled people. At the same time, we learn that Marco is having trouble with his wife, Sonia, who, contrarily to him, wants to have a baby. Progressively, thanks to his new team, Marco starts questioning his behavior. He slowly becomes attached to this new “family”, that he never asked for, but always needed.
I really liked the movie Campeones. Indeed, I think it is very funny. Personally, I didn’t find the humorous passages exaggerated. The moment when Juanma gets rid of his aquaphobia is so over-the-top, surreal and ridiculous that we can’t help ourselves from laughing. I’d also like to point out that what’s very difficult about movies dealing with disabilities is that humor doesn’t have to turn into mockery. In this movie, we do laugh with the players and not at them.
Moreover, I think that, even though this movie mainly focuses on comedy, it still remains very realistic and teaches us valuable lessons. The players may have disabilities, but after all, they’re not really different. They have a life, a job, feelings and passions. The movie shows very well that the word “normal” doesn’t really mean anything and that difference is not a real problem, contrarily to how society unfortunately depicts it. Additionally, I actually found the players very interesting and loveable, since they allow us to see the world in a more imaginative way.
The movie is also very moving. I particularly think that the scene on the bus was very sad, since nobody wanted to sit next to the players of the team, and that all the passengers were very hostile towards them. One woman had even said during this scene that certain buses should only be dedicated for disabled people, which clearly illustrates the fact that "Los Amigos" are probably often excluded from society and considered like weird people, while they don’t deserve any of those treatments.
I also appreciated the friendship that unites the team players and Marco. They all care about each other. For instance, everybody encourages Juanma to conquer his fear of water and take a shower. Plus, I particularly loved the fact that, at the end, Marco had become a sort of father figure to the whole team, which shows very well his evolution throughout the whole movie. At first, he was more than reluctant to coach “Los Amigos”, but at the end, he didn’t even have the strength to say goodbye, since he cared so much about them. The relationship between the players and the coach is therefore very moving and plays a big part in the beauty of this movie.
I also think the actors did a really great job. Javier Gutiérrez, who plays Marco Montes, is very credible and shows quite well all the complexity of his character. He may seem like a despicable and rude person sometimes. Nonetheless, some hidden details reveal his true sensitivity and let us believe that it’s not because of nothing that he acts this way. Indeed, for example, the mother does appear as a comic relief in the movie, but we never hear of his father, which lets us presume that maybe Marco didn’t really have the best father in the world. That would therefore partially explain why he doesn’t want to have a baby with Sonia. He’s scared of being a bad father figure to his child. I would also particularly like to give a special mention to the ten members of the team “Los Amigos”, especially knowing that they had no experience in acting.
I therefore highly recommend this movie. Indeed, even though it’s not really a movie that will change your life, it’s still pretty good and very interesting, since it talks about real issues in our society.

The Plot
The story takes place in South Africa in 1995. Apartheid has just been abolished and Nelson Mandela is elected president of South Africa but there is still hostility between Black and White people. South Africa has been awarded the rugby world cup so Nelson Mandela asks François Pienaar, the captain of the National team, the Springboks, to help him to remedy to the tensions between the communities. They decide to win the world cup to prove Black and White people can be united.
Would I recommend this movie ?
My answer is yes. This film took me through a lot of emotions, I think it was very well written and it has a very beautiful message. Having seen this film will remain a very good experience in my memories.
Invictus is a film which promotes a tolerance and forgiveness message. Directed by Clint Eastwood and realised in 2009, this film tells the story of the South Africa after the Apartheid and the election of Nelson Mandela as president of the country.
The plot involves Nelson Mandela played by Morgan Freeman, who just has been elected president and Francois Pienaar, the captain of the South African’s rugby team, played by Matt Damon. Seeing the division of the country between the blacks and the whites, Mandela decides to call on Francois Pienaar to gather the country. The idea of the president is that winning the rugby world cup. Indeed, the sport and more specifically the sports team, have a federating power. The film is very touching because it tells with fiction a part of the real life of Nelson Mandela. This man demonstrated a great generosity and an incredible indulgence. Therefore, Invictus tells how the South Africa has recovered from 40 years of apartheid.
I highly recommend this film because it shows that one man can change all mentalities and that the sport unites people.
